
Three well deserving Newport News students have been awarded a criminal justice scholarship from Virginia Sheriff’s Institute, Inc.
Jennifer L. Smith is a rising sophomore at Old Dominion University, after having graduated from Denbigh High

Mia Brewer
School in 2007. Tim Barnes, Jr. graduates from Heritage High School’s Engineer & Technology Magnet Program this year and will attend Virginia Union University in the Fall. They are pictured together with Sheriff Gabe Morgan. Mia M. Brewer, in a separate photo, will be starting her second year at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Each student demonstrated academic success and showed a willingness to give to their community through extracurricular activities.
The Newport News Sheriff’s Office is an active member of the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute (VSI) and helps raise funds for this worthwhile scholarship program. Sheriff Gabe Morgan personally congratulated Tim, Jennifer and Mia at brief check presentation ceremonies.
