The Sheriffs
As directed in the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Constitution, there shall be elected by the qualified voters of each county and city a sheriff. Sheriffs in Virginia are independent constitutional officers whose duties and authority are controlled by statue. In Virginia, sheriffs are responsibility for a wide range of criminal justice related activities, including law enforcement, jail administration, inmate transportation and court services. There are 123 city and county sheriffs in Virginia.
