Supporting Virginia’s Sheriffs & Deputies

hampton-so-patchOn December 1, 2016, the Hampton Sheriff’s Office will be hosting an open house to introduce its innovative inmate reentry program. The goal is to educate and train inmates to return to their community as productive citizens. Various presenters will share why they are partnering with the sheriff’s office to kickoff this initiative. Sheriff B.J. Roberts views the ‘Ready, Set Go’ model (RSG) as a strategic and innovative approach in addressing the recidivism problem. Inmates will be engaged in lessons and activities designed for them to learn and take responsibility for their own behaviors. This is a very empowering and sustaining experience for those who complete the program. The concept of the RSG is that each participant will be assessed and matched to appropriate programs and services.

The open house is an opportunity for partners to network and highlight their interactions. Sheriff Roberts’ vision is for this initiative to include a college component. Safety has more to do with how we intervene with inmates while they are incarcerated and connecting them with key community human resources. Sheriff Roberts and his staff would like the community to know how they are providing life changing program services. Through these programs, the Hampton Sheriff’s Office is optimistic it will have a direct impact on recidivism and change the community’s perception of returning citizens.
