The Richmond City Sheriff’s Office hosted a Barbershop Talk with Radio One’s Clovia Lawrence and the Peer Nation 1 team on Friday, December 14 from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. This team of recovery and reentry experts consists of counselors, peer recovery specialists, and former substance users as advocates.
The goal of this event is to educate, promote, and advocate for substance abuse treatment, domestic violence ‘safe havens’, mental health peer support, and positive relationships.
According to Sheriff Antionette V. Irving, “We are hosting this forum to provide our inmates with an open dialogue to discuss the challenges they face once they leave incarceration and provide them with resources to help them overcome these challenges”.
In addition to the Peer Nation 1 team, United Healthcare, Curb the Crisis organization and the Department of Behavioral Health Developmental Services will provide inmates housed at the Richmond City Justice Center with healthcare, substance abuse treatment resources, and wellness techniques they can utilize once they leave the facility.
