The Newport News Sheriff’s Office is proud to introduce its Deputy of the Year 2019 — Master Deputy J. Cherry.

Sheriff Gabe Morgan surprised Deputy Cherry with the news in mid-December. Deputy Cherry was told to report to the 2nd floor in the Justice Building, so he promptly went there from his position in Courts.

Many co-workers were on hand as Sheriff Morgan called him up and presented the certificate. He noted Cherry’s strong work ethic and tireless efforts as a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club.

Agency officials wrote: “We appreciate Deputy Cherry. By volunteering, he has given the most expensive and priceless gift anyone could have ever given to our youth. Deputy Cherry facilitated our Street SMART program, which is a gang prevention and violence program. He also provided snacks to approximately 80 members at our Citizens Club in Hampton.

Boys and Girls Clubs thanks Deputy Cherry for caring about our kids and community. He helped ensure that our youth have a positive and impactful club experience, leading to great futures.”

Master Deputy Cherry was also recognized during the annual Promotion and Awards ceremony. He has been with the Newport News Sheriff’s Office since August 2014 and was promoted to Master Deputy in January 2019.
