Congratulations to Captain Alonzo Cherry for receiving The Unsung Heroes Award. He humbly accepted the award at the Juneteenth Extravaganza at Darling Stadium in Hampton on June 19, 2022. He was presented the award by Gaylene Kanoyton, President of Celebrate Healthcare, and surprised by his wife, the Honorable Anne Cherry.
Captain Cherry is a Hampton resident and an 18-year veteran of the Hampton Sheriff’s Office where he serves as Community Relations/Public Information Officer and a member of Sheriff Bowden’s Leadership Team. He leads Project Life Saver for several families in Hampton that have an elderly parent with Alzheimer’s or a child with Autism assisting them if their love one is ever missing. In addition, he is the Vice Chairperson for the Peninsula S.A.L.T. Council and the Secretary for Hampton TRIAD.
Captain Cherry has always exemplified the spirit of the profession through hard work and selflessness by going above and beyond what is asked of him. He is a pillar of the community and graciously supports whomever and wherever he can. He is devoted to serving seniors and youth in our community. He is always available to assist his colleagues, provide leadership and guidance while pushing them to strive for the best. He wears all of his hats proudly with happiness and a positive spirit.
Gaylene Kanoyton, President of Celebrate Healthcare stated, “Captain Cherry has helped and been a resource to the community, especially for youth and senior millennials. He never complains and stands ready to serve where needed. Captain Cherry is an angel in our community.”
