10 recruits are now certified deputy sheriffs of the Newport News Sheriff’s Office.

They graduated on Thursday, July 25, from the Basic Jailors School (Class 24-2) of the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy.

Dep. Marcus Aberdeen, Dep. Brandon Roberson-Vanhorn, Dep. Ty-Quann Alston, Dep. Christopher Colvin, Dep. Andrea Gorde, Dep. Tamia Roberson, Dep. Francis Jacobson, Dep Joshawa Martel, Dep. Desean Moore, and Dep. Matthew Gannon will spend the next couple of weeks training in various sections before returning to their shifts in Jail Operations.

Two NNSO deputies were recognized for their accomplishments at the academy.

Deputy Gannon had the top Cooper fit test score – an average of 86.6%; Deputy Gorde received the academic achievement award scoring 98%, missing just eight of 443 questions.
