Supporting Virginia’s Sheriffs & Deputies

The Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office DARE Team, along with other staff members, proudly participated in Read Across America by reading to students at numerous schools throughout the district. With the assistance of his DARE Team, the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office acknowledges that fostering a love for reading early is the key to ensuring our students’ success in school and in life. The Theme for Read Across America Day for 2025 was “Create and Celebrate a Nation of Diverse Readers.”

Sheriff, Michael A. Moore understands that books have the magic to transport students to different worlds and to spark their imagination. He is a strong advocate for having deputies actively engaged in the school system—not just as DARE Deputies and School Resource Officers, but also as community mentors who build lasting relationships with students and staff. Each year, the deputies eagerly embrace the opportunity to read aloud, fostering goodwill and inspiring a love of reading within our community.
