The Arlington County Sheriff’s Office proudly announced the graduation of ten new deputies from the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy on
Monday, December 1, 2025. The ceremony was held at Northern Virginia Community College in Sterling, Va., where hundreds gathered to celebrate the newest members of the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Mariel Stein received the prestigious Director’s Award for Academic Excellence for achieving the highest overall academic score among all deputy recruits. In addition, Deputy Stein was elected Class President by her peers and was awarded the highly esteemed Thomas L. Shaw Award, recognizing exceptional leadership, professionalism, and character throughout the academy.
Sheriff Jose Quiroz praised the graduates for their dedication and commitment: “These new deputies represent the very best of public service. Completing this academy requires grit, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility to our community. We are incredibly proud of each graduate, and especially of Deputy Stein’s remarkable achievements. The future of the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office is stronger because of these men and women, and we look forward to the positive impact they
will make in the years ahead.”
The cohort completed 10 weeks of intensive, scenario-based training, including: emergency vehicle operations, firearms instruction, defensive and control tactics, crash investigation, de-escalation and crisis intervention, basic legal studies and ethics and professionalism. Deputies also completed additional training specific to sheriff’s office duties, including jail operations, courthouse security, and civil process service.
