Two weeks from Saturday, February 7, Chesterfield County Sheriff Karl Leonard will join more than 3,500 supporters for the Special Olympics Virginia Polar Plunge in Virginia Beach, braving the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean in support of athletes across the Commonwealth.
As part of a lighthearted fundraising challenge, Sheriff Leonard has pledged that if he reaches his 25,000-dollar fundraising goal, he and Jeff Katz will take the challenge even further. The pair will plunge into a pool of mayonnaise and each sample surströmming, one of the world’s most notoriously pungent foods.
The surströmming has already arrived after a long journey overseas, making the commitment very real as the plunge date approaches.
