The Richmond City Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) continues to recognize the importance of service, courage, and community engagement through educational and historical reflection. One powerful example is the enduring legacy of the 1961 Freedom Riders, whose bravery helped challenge segregation across the American South during the Civil Rights Movement. Now the modern-day Richmond Freedom Riders, 25 individuals impacted by the justice system and 25 individuals not directly involved in the system but wanting to impact justice, sat with current residents of the Richmond City Justice Center (RCJC) to educate, encourage and give their testimonies of real-life experiences before heading on their journey to Alabama.
It was an honor and a privilege to have one of the original 1961 Freedom Riders, Ms. Joan Mulholland, visit RCJC during this time.
By remembering the sacrifices of the 1961 Freedom Riders, RCSO reaffirms its commitment to public service, fairness, and strengthening relationships within the Richmond community. Their legacy serves as a reminder that positive change is driven by courage, unity, and a dedication to protecting the rights and dignity of all people.
