Supporting Virginia’s Sheriffs & Deputies

Two Alleghany County law-enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice more than a century ago are now being honored with memorial highway designations.

Working with the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff Kyle Moore helped secure the designations recognizing Sheriff Edwin Butler and Deputy Samuel A. Brown III. Dolly Ann Drive, from the western boundary of Alleghany County to Route 606/Rose Street, has been designated the Sheriff Edwin Butler Memorial Highway. A portion of East Morris Hill Road, from Indian Draft Road to Coles Mountain Road, has been designated the Deputy Samuel A. Brown III Memorial Highway.

Sheriff Butler was shot while attempting to make an arrest on August 9, 1922, and died from his injuries three days later. Deputy Brown was fatally shot while attempting to arrest a suspected thief on July 8, 1927.

The new signs ensure that both officers’ service and sacrifice will be remembered by the Alleghany County community for generations to come.
