Last week, the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff Joe Baron Foundation hosted four sports camps for Norfolk-area youth between the ages of 8-12 years old. The camps were held in partnership with several sports teams and non-profits in Hampton Roads.
On Monday they attended soccer camp on the Old Dominion University (ODU) Soccer Field alongside the ODU Men and Women’s Soccer team. On Tuesday, they attended Basketball Camp at Lake Taylor High School and worked alongside coaches from the non-profit organization Home Hearted Hoops. Wednesday was Baseball Camp with the Maury High School Baseball Team on the campus of Norfolk State University. Last but not least was Football Camp at S.B. Ballard Stadium on the campus of ODU. For the first part of the day, attendees practiced alongside the Virginia High School League Class 5 state champions from Maury High School and for then had the honor of practicing alongside the ODU Football team in the afternoon.
More than 40 kids attended each camp and learned valuable skills, lessons in sportsmanship, and even got to play scrimmage games with the players. Each year these camps are held free of charge for youth thanks to community partnerships and donations made to the Sheriff Joe Baron Foundation. Additonally, Norfolk Public Schools provides breakfast and lunch for all of the children.
