The Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), recently concluded its third annual Citizens Academy, marking another successful milestone in the agency’s ongoing effort to strengthen community connections and support public safety initiatives. The immersive 10-week program provided local residents with an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement operations, professional standards, and the multi-faceted responsibilities of modern public safety.
Held on consecutive Mondays from May 4th through June 29th at the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office, the academy brought together a selected class of 25 participants who underwent comprehensive interactive learning and hands-on experiences. Designed to highlight the high operational capability and structured training environment of the agency, the curriculum was delivered directly by specialized CCSO command staff and instructors.
Weekly blocks of instruction covered critical operational divisions, including Administration and Finance, the Patrol Division, the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), the Jail Division, the School Resource Officer (SRO) Division, Internal Affairs (IA) and Court Services. Additionally, participants received specialized training in firearms safety and concealed carry laws, participated in a practical Range Day, and concluded the program with a formal graduation ceremony.
This educational outreach serves as a testament to the agency’s commitment to transparency, professional development, and institutional excellence. By opening its doors to the public, the sheriff’s office continues to demystify the realities of local policing while fostering deep-seated community unity.
“We take great pride in our organization and want our citizens to have a behind the scenes, firsthand look at our commitment to professional policing, accountability, and community service. Every week we were able to show the group how each Division is run, using a controlled environment with simulated job stressors. They were able to experience a small piece of what our staff undergoes on a daily basis,” said Captain Bill Hutchinson.
