On July 3, 2025, while conducting night checks, First Sgt. Curry of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office heard something strike the side of his patrol car. Returning to the scene, he discovered an injured owl. Sgt. Clark assisted with the bird’s safe capture, and it was taken to a local wildlife rehabilitator for evaluation.
The rehabilitator determined that the owl had likely been attacked and was missing tail feathers, which may have caused the collision. It was then transferred to the Wildlife Center of Virginia for additional care, where staff treated damage to the bones around its eye.
Three months later, on October 3, with the help of a Wildlife Center team member, Mrs. Joyce Clar, Sgt. Clark, First Sgt. Curry, and his son Landon were able to release the owl back into the wild, right where it was first found.
In addition, members of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office recently joined the Falling Springs Ruritan Club for a community trash pickup day. Many bags of litter were collected and properly disposed of at the landfill. This marks the third cleanup event the Sheriff’s Office has participated in, with more than 2,500 pounds of garbage removed so far.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to do their part by disposing of trash responsibly and keeping the community clean.
