The Humane World for Animals hosted its annual “To the Rescue” Gala on Thursday, November 7, 2025, bringing together law enforcement leaders, animal advocates, and community partners from across the country to promote compassion and responsibility in animal welfare.
This year’s event featured members of the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), with Sheriffs from across the country participating in support of efforts to strengthen partnerships between law enforcement and animal protection organizations. Among the distinguished attendees was the Honorable Sheriff Vanessa R. Crawford of the City of Petersburg, Virginia, who continues to be an outspoken advocate for both community safety and humane treatment of animals.
“Protecting animals and protecting our communities go hand in hand,” said Sheriff Vanessa R. Crawford. “When we care for the most vulnerable — whether they walk on two legs or four — we strengthen the values of empathy, safety, and respect that every community deserves.”
The “To the Rescue” Gala highlighted national programs that equip law enforcement agencies to identify and prevent animal cruelty, connect abuse cases to broader public safety concerns, and promote humane education. Proceeds from the event will support initiatives that rescue animals, provide shelter resources, and enhance training for officers responding to cruelty cases.
The National Sheriffs’ Association continues to play a key role in bridging the gap between animal welfare and public safety through education, advocacy, and partnerships with organizations like Humane World for Animals.
