The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office hosted its first-ever Women’s Safety Night on Saturday, April 11, at The Shores of Cedar Point, drawing more than 150 attendees for an evening focused on education, empowerment, and community connection.
A highlight of the event was a hands-on demonstration led by a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor, who showed practical self-defense techniques, including how a woman can safely take down a larger attacker. The demonstration left a strong impression on attendees and helped make the evening both impactful and informative.
Participants left the event energized, sharing positive feedback about how much they learned and how valuable the experience was.
The event also served as a fundraiser for the office’s upcoming National Night Out celebration in August. Through raffles featuring a wide range of donated prizes, including gift baskets, a kayak, a Yeti beach chair, a half-day lighthouse charter tour, and more, the office raised $5,132.50 after expenses to support the community event.
This successful first-year program reflects the continued commitment of Virginia’s sheriffs’ offices to creating opportunities that strengthen safety awareness, build confidence, and bring communities together.
