On Friday, April 25, members of the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office participated in the National Drug Take Back Initiative held in the Walmart parking lot in Petersburg, Virginia. Representing the agency were Sgt. D. Fontenot and Cpl. C. Keller, who assisted community members with the safe disposal of unused, unwanted, and expired prescription medications.
The National Drug Take Back Initiative is designed to help prevent prescription drug misuse, accidental poisoning, and improper disposal of medications by providing the public with a safe and convenient way to dispose of prescription drugs responsibly.
The Petersburg Sheriff’s Office remains committed to supporting public safety initiatives that promote community wellness, awareness, and the prevention of substance misuse.
Sheriff Vanessa R. Crawford praised the continued efforts of deputies and community partners who participated in the initiative. “Programs such as the National Drug Take Back Initiative play a critical role in protecting our communities and raising awareness about the dangers associated with unused and expired medications,” said Sheriff Vanessa R. Crawford. “I commend Sgt. Fontenot and Cpl. Keller for their dedication to community engagement and their continued efforts to help keep Petersburg safe.”
To ensure year-round safety, the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office also maintains a permanent drug drop box located directly within the Sheriff’s Office. This resource is accessible to the public five days a week during regular office hours, providing a secure and anonymous way to dispose of medications outside of scheduled event dates.
The Petersburg Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to continue utilizing safe medication disposal practices and to remain proactive in helping reduce prescription drug abuse within the community.
