The Petersburg Sheriff’s Office proudly announces that Major Derrick Thorne and Lieutenant Chris Bailey successfully received certification through the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute during the organization’s Annual Conference held in Norfolk on April 30, 2026.
The Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute (VSI) Certification Program is a professional development program
designed to enhance leadership, management, and operational effectiveness within sheriff’s offices
across the Commonwealth of Virginia. The certification process includes advanced instruction in law
enforcement leadership, administration, ethics, public safety operations, and professional standards.
Participants are required to complete rigorous training and continuing education requirements to earn certification.
Major Thorne and Lt. Bailey were recognized for their commitment to professional excellence and
continued advancement in public safety leadership.
