Sheriff Darrell W. Warren Jr. commands a progressive Sheriff’s Office with over 100 deputies and civilian personnel. The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for providing law enforcement services to over 37,000 citizens within an area of 217 square miles comprising the county of Gloucester which is located at the southern end of the middle peninsula. The Sheriff’s Office is also responsible for the 911 Center and dispatches law enforcement, fire and rescue services for the county. Sheriff Warren oversees the Gloucester County Jail which houses an average daily population of 85 inmates, provides security for the County Courthouse and our Civil Process Division serves several thousand civil papers annually.
Sheriff Warren was born and raised in Williamsburg Virginia and joined the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office in 1991 as a patrol deputy. Sheriff Warren was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 1995 where he also joined the Special Operations Unit. In 1998, Warren was promoted to Patrol Lieutenant and shortly thereafter, transferred to Investigations where he served as the Criminal Investigations Division Supervisor. In 2000, his promotion to Captain of Law Enforcement placed him as the Division Commander in charge of Uniform Patrol, Investigations, School Resource Officers, Communications, and Auxiliary personnel. Sheriff Warren also served as the Commander of the Special Operations Unit and Public Information Officer for the office. In 2008, Warren was promoted to Major of Law Enforcement and in 2010 appointed to serve as the Chief Deputy. In 2011, Warren served as the Accreditation Manager when the Sheriff’s Office earned their Accreditation from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission. Sheriff Warren has proudly served the community as Sheriff since February of 2012.
Sheriff Warren is a graduate of the 236th session of the F.B.I. National Academy, a 2001 graduate of the Professional Executive Leadership School at the University of Richmond and he holds a degree in Administration of Justice. Warren serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Gloucester and he is a member of the Abingdon Ruritan Club and Union Baptist Church.
