The Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office is offering a course for citizens on firearm safety, storage, proper weapon manipulation and malfunctions, along with issues and responsibilities that come with firearm ownership. While range instructors put on the course is at no charge, the sheriff’s office asks for a donation of 10 non-perishable food items, which will be donated in times of need around the Roanoke Valley. The course is held twice a month and usually fills up quickly. Since May, 182 citizens have completed the course, which has resulted in more than 1,000 pounds of donated food to a local churches for distribution.
