The Petersburg TRIAD/S.A.L.T. Council, in conjunction with the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office, celebrated Black History Month at its monthly meeting on February 20, 2020. The seniors met at Good Shepard Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Mrs. Evelyn Allen came as a special guest. Ms. Allen did a rendition of “Ain’t I a Woman” by Sojourner Truth, and she serenaded the group with a song which was loaded with facts about Sojourner Truth’s life. She later quizzed the seniors on Sojourner Truth’s life and black history.

The performance was moving and it connected with the audience, as Ms. Allen was dressed for the part. She was dressed in a white ensemble, which was indicative of the time. The seniors felt they had met the woman who demanded both equal rights for all women and for all blacks at a time when both of these rights were just a dream. Following the execution of the song and poem, the seniors put their best foot forward and presented the audience with a fashion show wearing their beautiful African attire.

The Petersburg TRIAD meets every third Thursday at 1 p.m. at Good Shepard Baptist Church. If you are interested in becoming a TRIAD member of if you would like any information about the programs that the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office offers, you can call the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office at 804-733-2369.
