Supporting Virginia’s Sheriffs & Deputies

Sworn and civilian staff of the Newport News Sheriff’s Office are helping young children learn to read.

NNSO volunteers are trained each year and then make the weekly trip to the Title I schools to spend an hour with students k through grade 2 are reading below their grade level.

Sheriff Morgan knows how important it is for a child’s future to be able to read.  Students with strong reading have a better chance of success – throughout school and in life.

This year, they are paired with students at McIntosh and Hidenwood Elementary schools who need some one-on-one attention to increase their literacy.

The NNSO has teamed up with the Norfolk-based Life Enrichment Center since the 2017-2018 school year.   In 2020, the sheriff’s office was honored as the Center’s Partner of the Year for its commitment to helping children reach their grade level in reading and comprehension.

Tutoring is rewarding and a great way to build relationships between students and members of the criminal justice system.
