The Newport News Sheriff’s Office (NNSO) has been selected as one of 12 winners in the 2025 Community Policing in Action photo contest, chosen from more than 100 entries submitted by law enforcement agencies nationwide. The contest, organized by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), celebrates moments that highlight positive interactions between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

The winning photograph, taken by NNSO photographer Logan Scherle, captures Sgt. U. Ramos of the Civil Enforcement team serving lunch at a city gathering that honors Newport News residents aged 90 and older. This event is just one example of how NNSO lives out its motto, “Committed to making a difference,” which serves as a guiding principle for its personnel in their daily work with inmates, the public, and the broader community.

The COPS Office will feature the photograph on its website, social media channels, and in its e-newsletter, The Community Policing Dispatch, throughout 2025. Congratulations, NNSO!
