The Newport News Sheriff’s Office (NNSO) recently participated in the Day of Service Food Drive, an initiative encouraging employees to clear their pantries or shop for canned goods to support the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula. This year, NNSO collected nearly 500 pounds of food and $200.
Donated items were gathered in boxes and weighed to determine which section would win a lunch hosted by Sheriff Gabe Morgan. The donations were then delivered to the annual Dr. King Day of Service Food Drive on Monday, January 20, joining contributions from fraternities, sororities, churches, businesses, and families who came together to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service.
By the end of the four-hour event, the food drive had amassed enough donations to provide 32,000 meals, along with $10,000 in financial gifts. Foodbank officials were thrilled to see their empty shelves restocked.
This year marked the ninth annual food drive; originally started by Mayor McKinley Price, the tradition is now carried on by Mayor Phillip Jones. Sheriff Morgan has been a dedicated partner since the event’s inception, showcasing his ongoing commitment to the community.
Sheriff Morgan is a long-time advocate for the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula. He has served on its board, raised funds for facility expansions, and continues to support its mission of feeding families in need across the Peninsula.
