Sheriff Gabe Morgan and members of his command staff joined other Newport News public safety leaders to role play a variety of situations/threats designed to enhance the school system’s crisis management plan.

Monday’s joint public safety tabletop exercise helped to identify the best ways to prepare and effectively work with Newport News Schools during a school-related threat.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Mitchell told CBS affiliate WTKR-TV, “It’s part of our process to conduct these drills once or twice a year, sometimes even three times. This allows us to come together, review our safety practices, evaluate what is effective, and refine our strategies for best practices.”

These tabletop exercises are part of Newport News Public Schools’ comprehensive and integrated school safety framework designed to create positive school environments, support student well-being, prevent school violence, and protect the school community through effective security measures and preparedness planning.
