Supporting Virginia’s Sheriffs & Deputies

As students across the region prepare to return to the classroom, the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce a collaborative new initiative aimed at ensuring a safe, supported, and successful academic year for the youth of our community. In a concerted effort to foster a positive environment for our children, the Sheriff’s Office has partnered with local school districts, area churches, and several local businesses to provide essential support, safety education, and critical community resources.

We are also proud to share that we recently engaged with a “stop the violence” community event, which was a tremendous success with over 300 people in attendance. This gathering underscored our commitment to unity and safety.

This initiative is built on the belief that student success is a community-wide responsibility. By aligning law enforcement resources with the guidance of educators and the mentorship found in local faith-based organizations and businesses, the program aims to offer a holistic support system that extends well beyond the classroom walls.

“When our community comes together, we create a safety net that empowers our children to thrive,” said Sheriff Vanessa Crawford. “This back-to-school season is about more than just new supplies; it is about reinforcing our commitment to every child’s future. By partnering with our schools, churches, and business leaders, we are sending a clear message to our youth: you are valued, you are supported, and we are all invested in your success. It takes a village to raise a child, and today, that village is standing united.”

The Petersburg Sheriff’s Office remains dedicated to proactive community policing and looks forward to continuing these partnerships throughout the academic year to ensure that every student has the tools they need to succeed.
